This website layout worked well enough for my portfolio, but I’m getting kind of sick of it. It doesn’t work well as a blog. This narrow column is pretty annoying. The text spacing seems all wrong and you can’t even see the links very well. What the hell? Who designed this shit?
I think it’s time to go back to the vintage wallpaper website and get some new inspiration. Haha.

Another work week is nearly over and it’s what we like to call “Friday Funday” here in the office. The atmosphere is a little nutty today – and it’s tough to say whether people are more excited about the Obama rally or the NCAA basketball tournament. In both cases there has been streaming video involved, but by now we have all learned to switch over to the free wifi from Backspace downstairs instead of using up the company bandwidth – and so avoiding the wrath of our network guys. The Backspace wifi holds up pretty well considering all the streaming we do and the MMORPG playing that goes on down there. I don’t feel too guilty piggy-backing off their internets since they get probably $30 from me every week in lattes and bagels.
So, where the hell is spring? It’s freaking cold here… and of course rainy, but WTF, cold!?! That reminds me, yesterday I was walking downtown and noticed the Stumptown Coffee’s sidewalk folding sidewalk board/sign thing (what are those called?) and was really enjoying the illustration of the guy all huddled up in a hooded coat in drenching rain. I’ll have to go get a picture of it and figure out who the artist is. I find it kind of funny how Portland seems to have a certain pride in the rainy weather, and how a business can have such a depressing looking sign (to the outside-Portland observer) and get business from it. Well, Stumptown has the best coffee in town, or so my friends tell me, so that probably has something to do with their success as well.
In addition to awesome coffee and rain, Portland also has really cool concerts, and I will be going to two of them next week: Jens Lekman (Monday) and Justice (Wednesday). I’m super stoked for both of them. Jens Lekman should be a bit more intimate, and Justice will be crazy raver dance party I’m sure. Totally awesome to the max. And both of them are extremely close to the office, so I’ll just do some pre-party at the bar downstairs and then stumble down Burnside to Berbati’s Pan on Monday, and the Roseland on Wednesday.
Other things I like recently: drinking IPAs and Hefeweizen, sleeping in, the show It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Wordpress plugins (not evident on this site, but maybe someday), my friend’s band: Whispering Pines.
Things I have a hankerin’ for: a new digital camera, new shoes, houseplants, a dog, bikini-ready abs, NHL playoffs.

Jens Lekman:
we could fake our deaths
to get insurance money
and take on hippie names
I’d be Snowfish, you’d be Sunny
we could start a little farm
with little white bunnies
just ’cause watching them copulate
is very funny
(Friday Night at the Drive-In Bingo)
Need to remember to buy my tickets for the show.

…that I was asked to participate in… well it won some marketing awards, which is pretty cool.
PowerOfThePens.
Also it got a lot of people to view my website and my animations, and to send me emails – none of which I responded to because I am really lazy! I’m sorry! But if I respond now is it too little, too late?

While a bunch of people I know are at SXSW this weekend, I’ve been cleaning house, doing laundry and watching Netflix rentals. And also writing this blog:
What have I been up to lately? Well last week I mailed out 9 stuffed kitties that I made all by myself. I have a bunch of pictures on Flickr:

It’s been fun to check the mail everyday to see what kinds of things I got in return – every girl in the craft swap seems to have done something totally different! Now I just have to think about what I’m going to do next. Maybe something that will fit inside a small padded envelope. Mailing stuffed animals gets to be expensive – even though they’re not heavy, the cost of the larger boxes and shipping really adds up.
Work has been going really well – I love being busy. I started two new website builds in the last couple weeks, and finished a couple of Flash projects. One of which was a screensaver for the Smithsonian that had to be 100% finished in two days. It was a bit rough since I hadn’t done a screensaver before… well, who has? It seemed kinda old-fashioned to me at first, but after I got into it I started envisioning some cool stuff that I could do with Flash. You can build a control panel in Flash that controls aspects of your saver… so it’s two separate SWF files talking to each other on your machine. So there’s potential for making my own physics/math-based crazy Flash stuff that works as a screensaver… if I ever got into making crazy physic/math-based Flash stuff, that is. Anyway, the Smithsonian screensaver turned out pretty good – I think they really liked it. Don’t really know if it’s available for download yet.
I don’t really have any new drawings since I’ve been busier at work. But maybe I’ll work on something today… Ah, well…

So, I never know exactly what to write, or what exactly this website is “for”. Is it like some professional thing? Is it for my friends and family to see what I’m up to? Originally I just wanted it to be a place where I can post what I’m doing creatively (drawings, animations, websites, etc. etc.) but I’m not one of those people that gets the creative bug and goes crazy on projects week in and week out. I’m trying to be…
I have been working on my first softie (little stuffed animal guy) for a craft-exchange group I am in called She’s So Crafty. The deal is, a few times a year you make something for every other person in the group and mail it off to them. So everyone gets 10 other home-made crafty fun art projects/goodies. It’s a great idea and forces me to make stuff… otherwise I come up with too many excuses.
On another subject, I just joined a gym and lifted weights for the first time in about 6 months last night. Also, did some yoga this morning in our office (we have an instructor come in once a week, it’s great!). It’s good to feel a little bit sore in the muscle-y areas again.
Off on yet another tangent, I have a boyfriend who totally kicks some ass in so many ways I can’t even explain it. Wow. I’m really happy right now.
Oh crap I just got caught blogging at work. Better go! Haha!

Happy Holidays! It’s almost the end of the year so I figured I better look at my blog and see what’s going on… to my surprise I had two comments awaiting moderation. I didn’t even know I had to approve comments! You learn things everyday.
Thanks to everyone who sent me nice comments and emails about the Power of the Pens project – it was really fun and I’m really grateful I had the opportunity to do it. Hopefully this will make me get my ass in gear and make more animations. That’s going on my New Years’ Resolutions list:
- Make more animations
- Exercise more
- Be a better friend/daughter
- Do more creative things like painting, drawing, knitting and sewing
- Start playing hockey regularly again
- Dance more
- Keep up with blogs/comments/emails
- Pay off my credit cards
Stop blogging at work
I also need to start posting more drawings online… but instead of making anything new, I will instead show you a larger sized version of the self-portrait I made for the Wacom thing. Clicky to make it biggy.
